Norton internet security is crap

Sure, there are scenarios in which neither tool would be of any use, but, again, solve many of the common problems common users will come across. But by increasing the size of the pagefile, you increase the frequency of read-write access to the drive. Over time, it will wear the HDD out. And, again, virtual memory is not a good substitute for actual RAM. You're threatening me?

I'm terrified, I assure you. I think it's crap, and that has been my experience with it. The idea is not to get infected in the first place. After I get done working on someones computer, I give them a brief lesson in safe web-browsing practices, and teach them how to and stress the importance of keeping their software up-to-date. If users will not change their browsing habits, then they will inevitably become infected again - whether they are running a low-key, simple AV or a monstrous, resource-hungry and error-prone AV.

You can see my resume on my website. In the meantime, I repair computers on the side, just as I have done for the last fifteen years. I'm posting our thread of emails to Computer Forum, so that we may get the opinion of the community and maybe actually help someone out, rather than just having a private weiner-measuring contest.

Or, if you like, email me again, and I'll put it on the forum. Have a wonderful day! Last edited: Oct 24, I don't intend to have him deleted.

His empty "threat" is of little concern to me. I just want to know if anyone thinks he has a point. As far as a corporate environment, I'm not opposed to McAfee so long as you don't mind your machines going into an endless reboot-loop once in a while. I don't have any experience with AVG in a corporate setting, but imagine it would provide sufficient protection. I just don't see what the big deal is about suggesting someone scrap Norton in favor of a free and less intrusive more resourceful anti-virus solution.

Does anyone else? No, you're entitled to your opinion just as we all are. Personally, I think you're wrong and that Symantec markets a product as good or better than anyone, but that's my opinion and I'm really not posting here to debate the issue. Now, I think his E-mail was way out of line, however, your retort was equally aggressive. Does the provocation justify an equally aggressive, and antagonistic , response? But it has been my honest experience that it causes systems more harm than good.

Deanj20, I've sent you a private message. Jagga New Member. I'v heard alot of negativity about Norton AV over the years. Jagga said:. Bodaggit23 Active Member. Actually, I don't have any bad experence with norton 4.

Have you guys test it recently? Maybe the computer feel the resource hug is the one with mb ram and less than 1 gb processing power. Just a thought. Best wishes. Well, right after I typed the original post, I got a computer in for a woman.

I uninstalled it, and immediately the free physical memory increased to around MB free But still I posted the same thing on a computer security forum I frequent. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post.

The guy hasn't sent me any more emails, and I feel more confident in my practice of eliminating Norton from any home-based PC I work on. It just doesn't make sense to burden the system and the pocket-book with an AV that can be replaced by something that is equally-effective, less resource-hungry and free. I click that choice and nothing happens. I've used Norton products for many years, but this is likely to be the last.

When I make a setting selection, I expect the choice to be respected and remembered until I decide to change it. Hope you all have better luck than me. Yes, I've seen that response in the other threads. However, I decided to call Norton support regarding this issue. They stated this is the first time they're hearing about this issue. I pointed them to these threads on the Community forums. But as normal they wanted me to check all kinds of setting on my PC and even wanted me to set my default browser to IE rather than FF.

I told the tech this is just wasting our time and asked to speak with the department supervisor. He also stated there are no previous support tickets related to this issue. He stated he'd have to forward the case up for review and said they would call me back in the next week or so not holding my breath.

But if I do hear back, I will update this thread. If not, I will close this thread and move on with life. So I guess the moral of the story is everyone having this issue will need to file a formal support ticket and receive a case number in order for this to get escalated.

Getting Lv1 to escalate an issue seems to require that Lv 1 agent sees the issue first hand via remote session And then the ubiquitous promised hours call back Laughing about it now I was told 4 times over 4 weeks that I'd get a call back in hours. On the fifth try. I lucked on an agent that had information to my great surprise for me from the escalation team. Yes, please don't hold your breath.

Norton has 86 days to issue a fix before my subscription runs out. Otherwise I am gone after nearly 16 years with Norton. I do not need a babysitter when I am on the net. Norton, if anyone from your company cares one whit about losing users and by extension the users those users support, know and advise then I strongly suggest you take these complaints to heart and get off your La-Z-Boy chairs and fix it.

Failure to do so could result in any claims being denied. Remember, these forums are simply meant for other users to help each other and are not considered official Support Claims. To file a formal support ticket, either click on support on Norton's home page or click the link below.

It will then present you with options. Select the appropriate listing and click continue. Fill out the form and click Get Phone Number. Once you submit this, it will generate the Norton support phone number and your case number. Then call the number provided. Once you file an official support ticket, ensure you keep a copies of the ticket case number, dates of any calls, names of the persons you've spoke with, emails you've sent or received and a general synopses of any verbal conversations with customer support for your records.

Based on my past experiences, posting on web forums or other social media sources does not ensure your complaints will be addressed at the Corporate levels unless there are thousands of flooded complaints and even then does not guarantee satisfaction.

However, following the official procedures does preserve your legal rights under the terms of the agreement. I had thought about uninstalling it entirely but, from what I've read, if you completely uninstall it, it could cause some issues with the operating system or other installed MS software haven't verified these facts , so I just left it disabled.

So tonight, just out of curiosity, I launched IE to see if by chance there were any references to Norton in the add on manager. Low and behold there they were. I disabled both of them and cleared all history settings and closed out IE. I then restarted the PC and now I have the green check back!!! So I guess the moral of the story is if you have other browsers install on your PC, you'll need to go into each one and insure these add-on's are disabled or removed. I would suspect we'll still get the nag every once in a while but should be able to ignore it again.

Fingers crossed I am running Windows 10 Pro. Microsoft Edge comes with it as the default browser, however, Internet Explorer is still included.

This being said, I only use Firefox, v For those running Win 10 who may not know how to find IE on their systems, the link I posted above includes instructions. In my case, however, there is a caveat. I then confirmed that they were not active through the add-on managers. After clearing all history and cache, I re-booted.

After startup, the problem was still there. I repeated the process a couple more times with the same results. Then I remembered an old, but handy little free program that I still use called WinPatrol. It has a tab called "IE Helpers" where you can click on each add-on. It seems that this only affects IE, so I think it's likely that had I tried this first, I still would have had to follow your instructions for Edge.

The bottom line is that I'm now back to "Not Set Up", and the red x is gone, replaced by the green check mark. Infinitely preferable, imho. Hopefully, it will last. Status 'New' ready to use remains until user opts Enable or Disable. User is presented with dialog box upon opting for example Disable Toolbar. RE: Edge. If you've never installed Edge Norton extensions from Microsoft store. There's nothing to Enable or Disable.

RE: Internet Explorer. Norton installs Internet Explorer Norton add-ons. RE: WinPatrol abandonware. CCleaner offers similar. Yes, Internet Explorer Norton add-ons cannot be deleted. Can you select ignore the issue from within the UI?

I've rebooted my system several times and just now to confirm and I still have the green check showing. Win10 may be problematic in the fact that IE is somehow still a core component along with the new Edge Browser. I'm still on win7. Note sure if it applies to Win10 but you can take a look. I went to that article followed the instructions, and when I rebooted, the red x was replaced with the green check mark. However, when I rebooted again the red x was back. So, just for the heck of it, I ran the registry cleaner on CCleaner, and when I rebooted the green check mark was back.

And yet again, after another reboot, the red x is back. I don't know if you've seen this post on another thread or not, but it's very clear that "The Powers that be" have no intention of allowing us to run their product without their BHO.

However, my understanding is if you remove it, you may run into other problems as some features of the OS and other programs may rely on core components or associated DLL files. Just to chime in again, I'm running Windows 10 have tried the above fix extensions were disabled on IE to begin with, so I enabled them then disabled them just to see but choosing to ignore the risk still leaves the red x.

So the solution did not work for me. I'll sit tight until my subscription expires and reconsider this product if nothing's changed by then. Then they can darn well push their crap on somebody else cuz I'm done with them and their stormtrooper tactics.

OK lets play who wants to be a Win10 guinea pig! Since this problem seems to persist in Win10, who's willing to remove IE from their PC in the name of science to see if this clears the problem? Scroll down to Internet Explorer and uncheck the box. This will remove IE from your system and in theory should resolve the issue. Components of Internet Explorer are used by other programs on the machine regardless of whether you use IE.

OK supposedly Norton responded to couple of users that manged to send emails to Symantec Corp about this issue. The estimated fix date is now the end of November but subject to revision. I believe this issue is related to the legacy IE browser on peoples PC's especially those with Win That said, I'm closing out this thread, marking it as solved for me at least as I still have the green check back and moving on with life.
